HIRAETH PROJECT

The purpose of the 'Hiraeth' project was to help refugee families integrate into their communities in Powys by providing art workshops and a chance to meet new people.

We provided art workshops at Oriel Davies, Newtown, and also invited the families for a day trip on the train to Machynlleth where they had the opportunity to meet up with other refugee families from Aberystwyth.

We also provided workshops at schools in Newtown and Llandrindod Wells, where we explored Welsh and Syrian culture, stories and music.  With this information, the children created a buddy bench, an outdoor mural and a storytelling teepee to keep for years to come.

This project was run by Arts Connection and funded by Awards for All.

"We sometimes feel lonely and we like to go out and share days together. We had fun on the Hiraeth project and the children enjoyed the activities."
